Crieff is the main town of Strathearn lying on the southern edge of the Scottish Highlands. It is a holiday resort and is second largest town in Perthshire with a population of almost 6000.
The name comes from the Gaelic craobh - 'among trees'. The town spills from the Knock, the wooded hill above, down past the Highland Games park to the River Earn. James Square with it's fountain marks the centre of the town.
Montrose, Rob Roy Macgregor, Bonnie Prince Charlie, Robert Burns and many others from Scotland's colourful history have walked Crieff's historic High Street.
Just outside Crieff is the Famous Grouse Experience at the site of the old Glenturret Distillery. There, visitors can enjoy exhibitions, guided tours and a restaurant. Crieff also has a purpose built Visitor Centre housing a paperweight factory and pottery. Nearby is a Stuart Crystal factory outlet. There are fine Victorian public parks and excellent walks which start from the town centre. With a fine range of excellent hotels such as the Crieff Hydro, Crieff is a perfect family holiday destination.
Across Strathearn there's lots to see and do - trout fishing , a wildlife centre, 4x4 driving and Scotland's largest formal garden (seen in the film Rob Roy) at Drummond Castle. There are opportunities for golf, riding, walking and fishing with a short distance of Crieff.
